Website Design Strategy

According to Merriam Webster, strategy is defined as, “a careful plan or method.” The online dictionary giant also defines a website as, “a group of World Wide Web pages usually containing hyperlinks…and made available online by an individual, company…” Loosely combined and defined, that means your website design strategy must be the careful planning and creation of a group of web pages.

The point is this: website design isn’t something that should be thrown together with some generic template dotted with pretty colours, overused fonts, and generic language. Instead, in order for it to be highly effective for your bottom line, it must be uniquely directed toward your specific purposes and to your specific audience…in other words, it must be planned using a carefully thought-out strategy.

Your website design should be distinctively your own – purposefully unlike any other. Simply trying to be different probably won’t be enough. That’s why we have assembled these pieces of advice to assist you whilst you’re contemplating your web design strategy:

  • Describe your dream client. Take some time to name the qualities that you would use to build a client from nothing but wishes. This can be translated to your branding values, in that you will tend to want clients who share your values. Because your web design will be choreographed with these people in mind, it will influence these types to stay and/or click.
  • Name the problems your products and/or services will solve. Use your web design to speak to those people whose lives are affected by those problems. When a person enters your site and it’s immediately evident that you feel and recognise their pain, they will not only appreciate that empathy, they will reward it with their loyalty.
  • Make a list of the services you offer and those that you plan to offer. The human mind regularly reverts to the question, “What’s in it for me?” That’s why it is imperative that your website design makes it clear, specifically, how you will solve the problems and relieve the pain of your target audience’s members. If carefully planned, your services will prompt sighs of relief. If those services are properly communicated through your website design, those people will feel at home whilst visiting your site.
  • Know what you expect your website to accomplish. Get in touch with the things you want your website to do for you. You might hope for it to raise revenue, raise awareness, promote an event, help a cause…or any other combination of goals. Focus intensely on your goal when strategizing your website and its design will inherently help you to move toward them.
