Vector based Designs vs Pixel based Designs
Vector based Designs vs Pixel based Designs
When you are looking to have work done by a graphic designer, one of the things that will be discussed is how the design will be put together. What that means is choose between a vector based design and a pixel, or raster, based one. Let’s take a look at both so that you can get an idea of what will best work for your specific needs.
Vector design are done using algorithms, which essentially is a rather fancy way of saying they are math based. Geometrical points, lines, curves, and shapes are used to create an image that is displayed as a computer graphic. The benefits of vector designs id that they are generally smaller than pixel based images and can be sized up or down without any quality being lost. This is something that cannot be done with pixel images, which can be sized down only without pixilation occurring.
That’s not to say that there are no negatives with raster images, though, as they are really not the best choImpulse for detailed graphics that have a large number of colour values. The most common uses for vector images are for logos or images that will be used across a number of different media. The ability to smoothly change sizes without quality loss means that those vector images can be blown up or scaled down to fit all kinds of different things.
Pixel or raster images are completely different, and are what you find when you take a picture with a digital camera. Essentially, these types of images are created using individual building blocks (pixels) which you can actually see if you zoom into the image enough. The big benefit here is that incredibly detailed images can be created using high resolutions that produce thousands of different colours. As you might imagine, though, that amount of detail can make for a very, very large file, especially since each individual pixel has its own set of values.
If you are planning on using a design company and want them to use your pixel images, the simple act of sending them can become a chore, as they often need to be compressed before they can be sent via-email. Where you will find the biggest benefit with pixel based images is when you are creating something that does not required the images to be resized. The most common use for pixels is in website design, where the simplicity of creating these types of images and the high level of detail make it possible to create a website that looks like a work of art.
It can all be very confusing for someone unfamiliar with graphic design, which is why it’s best to speak to a pro who will be able to look at what you need and decide which of the two options will be best suited to your specific project.
