Graphic Design – Eye for detail is key!
Graphic Design – Eye for detail is key!
There are many elements that go into great graphic design, but it can be argued that an eye for detail is very much at the top of the list. It is attention to detail that can very much be the difference between a good design and a great one. This is something that is absolutely essential in any type of design, from a simple logo to the building of a bridge. Something may look beautiful when taken at face value, but may be a whole lot less than when put under the microscope.
When it comes to graphic design, it’s important to learn that the details can become overshadowed by clutter. Attention to detail doesn’t mean adding more to a design that doesn’t need it, and may in fact require you to remove elements that are getting in the way. For example, let’s that you create a simple logo that has only two elements, such as a symbol and the company name. Designers can get the idea that the simplistic nature of that design means a simplistic approach, but the eye to detail has to remain.
There are a number of ways to do this, starting with really zooming in on what you are doing and looking for flaws that may not necessarily be visible to the naked eye. While this mean seem like an unnecessary step, it may actually come into play if you are creating a vector design that the client wants to blow up in size later on. When that is done, any tiny flaws in the initial design will begin to look particularly large. If your design looks good, zoom in and make sure that it looks great.
It is easy to become so involved in the design that you can lose sight of what you have done and the direction that you are headed. It is often a good idea to step away from a design for a little bit of time before coming back to it. You might very well be surprised at how something that looked great before doesn’t any more when you are able to look at it as though it were fresh. This is almost like the writing process where a writer will finish a story they love, come back to it and see that edits need to be made to make it great.
In the same way that writers might put their work before an editor, designers will often ask their peers for input on finished designs. It is often difficult to see your own design flaws, but it’s much easier for someone else to bee subjective and help point out any potential issues. The graphic designers that continue to get more work are those that do the small things well. Clients are impressed by an attention to detail and will return for more when they see that a design company is committed to excellence.
